En su conferencia para desarrolladores en Los Angeles, Microsoft demostró algunas de las nuevas funcionalidades de la siguiente versión de Windows, denominada (en desarrollo) "Windows 8". Así mismo dio detalles de nuevas herramientas para desarrolladores, para permitirles hacer aplicaciones para más de 1 billón de personas que utilizan Windows diariamente. "Re-imaginamos Windows" dijo Steven Sinofsky, presidente de Windows y de Windows Live Division en Microsoft, "desde sus componentes hasta la experiencia al usuario".   Algunas de las nuevas características son: Metro style. Windows 8 introduce un Nuevo diseño de pantalla desarrollado para pantallas sensibles al tacto, en el cual se mostrara la información que es importante para el usuario. Las aplicaciones se conectaran. Estas se comunicaran entre sí en Windows 8. Por ejemplo, usted podrá fácilmente seleccionar y enviar fotos por mail desde diferentes lugares como Facebook, Flickr o desde su disco duro. Lo mejor de Windows 7, ahora mejorado. Windows 8 se construyo sobre los fundamentos de Windows 7, agregando mejoras en desempeño, seguridad, privacidad y estabilidad del sistema. Windows Store. Los desarrolladores de aplicaciones podrán vender sus aplicaciones en el Windows Store. Siempre conectado. Con Windows 8, los nuevos tablets cargaran el sistema inmediatamente, mejoraran su manejo de consumo de energía permitiéndoles durar más en una sola carga y estar conectados a internet para que así su pc o tablet estén listos cuando usted lo requiera, igualmente soportara tiempos extendidos en modo de Stand-by con consumos de energía mínimos.

The company also detailed new tools for developers to help write applications for more than 1 billion people around the world who use Windows every day. Windows 8 introduces a new Metro style interface built for touch, which shows information important to you, embodies simplicity and gives you control. The Metro style UI is equally at home with a mouse and keyboard as well. Touch-first browsing, not just browsing on a touch device. Providing a fast and fluid touch-browsing experience, Internet Explorer 10 puts sites at the center on new Windows 8 devices. More Ways to Engage With Powerful, Connected Apps Powered by apps. Metro style apps built for Windows 8 are the focal point of your experience, filling your entire screen so there are no distractions. Apps can work together. Apps communicate with each other in Windows 8. For example, you can easily select and email photos from different places, such as Facebook, Flickr or on your hard drive.
